What Is a Pallas's Cat?

(Автор: Арсений Милюков / Arsenii Miliukov)
Everyone talks about Pallas's cats, but what are they? If we trust Wikipedia, a Pallas's cat is a wild cat that looks a little like a house cat. I really love these animals. From the pictures I’ve seen, Pallas's cats are smaller and rounder than house cats. They have short legs, small ears, and very fluffy fur.
Pallas's cats are not very big. Their bodies are about 40-65 cm long, and their fluffy tails are around 30 cm. In the summer, they don’t weigh much—about 2 to 5 kg. But in winter, they get a little fatter, and their fur grows thicker. Scientists call this “getting ready for winter.”
Their fur is very, very fluffy! It helps them stay warm during cold winters. Each tiny square of their skin has 9,000 hairs, and each hair is 7 cm long! That’s a lot of fur for such a small cat.
What do they look like? Pallas's cats can be gray or orange, kind of like house cats. But they are much more beautiful!
Where do Pallas's cats live? They live in Asia, in countries like Iran, India, Mongolia, and Russia. But they are in danger because it’s hard for them to survive.
Why are Pallas's cats endangered?
They are slow and heavy, so big predators can catch them easily.
They can’t run fast to catch their food. They wait in hiding and then grab it. This only works when there’s a lot of food around.
What do they eat? Pallas's cats eat small animals like mice. Sometimes they catch a hare, a little ground squirrel, or a bird if they are lucky.
Pallas's cats are amazing animals! Their fluffy fur and special bodies help them live in tough places. I think they are very special and so beautiful!
